Lepanto A portion of Lepanto...Dim drums throbbing, in the hills half heard, Where only on a nameless throne a crownless prince has stirred, Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half-attainted stall, The last knight of Europe takes weapons from the wall, The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung, That once went singing southward when all the world was young. In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid, Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade. Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far, Don John of Austria is going to the war, Stiff flags straining in the night-blasts cold In the gloom black-purple, in the glint old-gold, Torchlight crimson on the copper kettle-drums, Then the tuckets, then the trumpets, then the cannon, and he comes. Don John laughing in the brave beard curled, Spurning of his stirrups like the thrones of all the world, Holding his head up for a flag of all the free. Love-light of Spain - hurrah! Death-light of Africa! Don John of Austria Is riding to the sea. For the whole poem, go here] | | Saturday, January 24th, 2009 | | 5:40 pm |

Quote Has God ever suffered
Does God know anything about pain? Does God know what I suffer? Did God ever have a migraine headache, as if his head was crowned with thorns? Does God know anything about the wounded hands and feet that are brought in to the accident wards of hospitals? Does God know anything about the starvation in India and Africa? Did he ever go without food for two days? Or three? Or five? Does he know anything about thirst? Does God know anything about homelessness? Was he ever without a home? Does he know what it is to be a refugee? To flee from one country to another? Does he know what it is to be in jail? To be the victim of scourging? Does God know any of these things? Yes. God is in Christ reconciling the world to himself.

OK, I need to update this, so I will include a poem that I like a lot (for obvious reasons).
It is by Hilaire Belloc, who wrote the favorite poem of J.K. Rowling (and is one of her favorite poets). Another person who was a fan of Belloc was Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd, who..er..plagiarized one of Belloc's poems for the original lyrics of "Matilda Mother"
Plus, Belloc wrote my favorite poem of all time: The Pelagian Drinking Song!
Anyway, here's the poem of his I was wishing to include in this post (though, believe it or not, it does *not* describe me): ___________________________________
I like to read myself to sleep in Bed, A thing that every honest man has done At one time or another, it is said, But not as something in the usual run; Now I from ten years old to forty one Have never missed a night: and what I need To buck me up is Gilbert Chesterton, (The only man I regularly read).
The 'Illustrated London News' is wed To letter press as stodgy as a bun, The 'Daily News' might just as well be dead, The 'Idler' has a tawdry kind of fun, The 'Speaker' is a sort of Sally Lunn, The 'World' is like a small unpleasant weed; I take them all because of Chesterton, (The only man I regularly read).
The memories of the Duke of Beachy Head, The memoirs of Lord Hildebrand (his son) Are things I could have written on my head, So are the memories of the Comte de Mun, And as for novels written by the ton, I'd burn the bloody lot! I know the Breed! And get me back to be with Chesterton (The only man I regularly read).
ENVOI
Prince, have you read a book called "Thoughts upon The Ethos of the Athanasian Creed"? No matter - it is not by Chesterton (The only man I regularly read). | | Thursday, January 8th, 2009 | | 6:34 pm |
Augustine My first post on InsaneJournal! :-)
Well, on LiveJournal, even though my username is Augustine, the writer I focus on the most is G.K. Chesterton.
Naturally, therefore, since on InsaneJournal my username is gkchesterton, the writer I am going to focus on most is Augustine! (ok, maybe not. lol. But for the first post I will!)
From The Faith of the Early Fathers by William A. Jurgens (p. 1): ___________________________________
If we were faced with the unlikely proposition of having to destroy completely either the works of Augustine or the works of all the other Fathers and Writers, I have little doubt that all the others would have to be sacrificed. Augustine must remain. Of all the Fathers it is Augustine who is the most erudite, who has the most remarkable theological insights, and who is effectively the most prolific. If Origen or Didymus the Blind or some other Father or Writer wrote more than Augustine- a hypothesis by no means certain- it is now of little account, because their works have not survived...
...Of all the Fathers, none wrote so well or so much as Augustine; and in modern times none other has been so much written about. He was unique in his time, and none like him has since been seen. |
